In brief:
- Michael Cohen, a former Trump ally and personal lawyer, was surprisingly present at the Democratic National Convention, claiming he has been a lifelong Democrat and now supports Kamala Harris and the Democratic party.
- Cohen famously outed Trump in the Stormy Daniels hush-money trial earlier this year, which resulted in Trump being convicted on 34 charges of falsifying business records.
- Cohen was very critical of Trump, calling him a "fraud, a con man, [and] a bullshit artist".
Let us take you over to the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, where Jon and Lewis are on the ground, watching the action unfold.
It’s the second day of the convention and Jon notices something.
“I was sitting here a little bit earlier, and I thought, bloody hell. That's Michael Cohen walking past, Trump's former attorney who gave evidence against Trump in the whole hush money trial in New York”.
It’s not a sight many people at the convention most likely expected to see. Michael Cohen was once a former Trump ally, serving as his personal lawyer and ‘fixer’. So what’s he doing at the DNC in Chicago?
Live from Chicago: The Democrat torch passes
Why was Michael Cohen at the Democratic National Convention?
After initially refusing to speak to the media, Jon Sopel eventually managed to get a few minutes with a reluctant Cohen, asking him the burning question: What are you doing here?
“Well, I got onto an airplane this morning, and the pilot was fantastic,” Cohen said. “We took off directly on time. We landed four minutes early. I got into a cab, and I came here.”
“Happy days,” Jon replied. “But, what are you doing here?”
It may seem odd that Cohen, who was a former Trump ally, would be at the DNC. But he insisted on his support for Kamala Harris and the Democrat party.
“I've been a Democrat my entire life,” he said. “I support Kamala Harris. I support Tim Walz, and as far as I'm concerned, a strong America means a strong world. A weak America means a weak world.”
Who is Michael Cohen and what’s his history with Trump?
Cohen, a former personal lawyer and ‘fixer’ for Trump, famously outed Trump in the very public hush-money trial against adult-film actress Stormy Daniels in May this year.
The trial focussed on a $130,000 payment Cohen made to Daniels in the lead up to the 2016 presidential election to remain quiet about her alleged affair with the former president.
Trump reimbursed Cohen after the election, logging the payment as legal expenses - a claim he stands by. The trial saw Trump convicted on 34 charges of falsifying business records.
Cohen was sentenced to prison in 2018 after pleading guilty to campaign finance charges and lying to congress. He spent over 13 months in prison and another year and a half in home confinement.
Kamala Harris arrives at the DNC early to support Joe Biden
What did Michael Cohen have to say about Donald Trump?
When asked what he thinks Trump will be feeling now Biden is out of the race and Harris is in, Cohen said: “that's a great question. I don't care what Donald Trump thinks”.
Although he may not care what Trump is thinking, he certainly had some thoughts of his own about Trump.
“He's a fraud, a con man, he's a bullshit artist to the nth degree,” Cohen told Sopel.
“No one's going to vote for [Trump]. Yes, he's going to have his 30-32% of Maga that's going to vote for him no matter what. He could kill someone on Fifth Avenue and get away with it, if you're Maga.”
Cohen is all in for Harris now, he says, claiming “Donald Trump will make the world weak, will cause all sorts of havoc, not just here in America, but around the entire world.”
“I truly believe that our democratic republic, our Constitution, has to stand, and so I am here supporting the only candidate in this race that believes the same as I.”
He went on: “we care about our democracy. We care about our Constitution, and at the end of the day, that's why people will vote Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Because again, out of the two candidates, they're the only ones that care.”
